As part of efforts to revolutionize livestock farming, strengthen food security and create job opportunities for rural communities, the Ekiti State Government through the Livestock Productivity Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) Project has constructed Farmers Field School Demonstration Pens across the three senatorial district of the state.
Speaking during an inspection of the facilities, the State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Hon. Ebenezer Boluwade noted that the Farmers Field School initiative with demonstration pens located in Ikole,Ado and Ikere Ekiti is a practical, hands-on training centre where farmers will learn improved methods of livestock management, animal health, breeding and pasture development.
He stressed that the project is a clear demonstration of Governor Biodun Oyebanji commitment to transforming agriculture into a driver of economic growth and rural prosperity.
According to the Commissioner, these newly constructed Farmer Field Schools equipped with demonstration pens facilities are strategically located to cover the entire state and are designed to equip farmers in the state,especially youths and women, with the right knowledge and modern practices to boost productivity as they will learning directly from demonstration farms stressing that ultimately farmers in the state will be empowered to scale up production, improve animal health and access better markets.
The demonstration pens located in Ikole Ekiti are designed for pigs and goats, those in Ikere Ekiti focus on poultry and sheep and goats, while those in the state capital, Ado Ekiti are designed for poultry, sheep,goats and pigs.
In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mr. Babatope Ojo, highlighted that facilities would serve dual purposes training and research while also functioning as hubs for agricultural extension services.
He emphasized that the knowledge farmers gain will be replicated across local communities, thereby multiplying the benefits of the project statewide.
Similarly, the state project coordinator L-PRES, Mr. Olayinka Adedipe explained that the decision to spread the demonstration pens across the three senatorial districts was deliberate to ensure fairness, accessibility and inclusiveness noting that the choice of livestock species for each center was based on the state interest and suitability, ensuring that farmers in each region derive maximum benefits.
Adedipe stated these faclities will not only reduce livestock mortality but also enhance productivity by encouraging the adoption of best practices.
“Our target is to build resilient livestock farmers who can contribute significantly to food security and economic development in Ekiti state” he stated
Farmers across the state have expressed optimism that the demonstration pens will bridge the gap in practical training, improve livestock health, and expand market opportunities for their produce.
With this development, Ekiti state has once again taken another significant step in modernizing its livestock sector, empowering farmers and strengthening its position as a hub for agricultural excellence in the state.
